The Bobolink may have a very funny name, but it’s not one of the more amusing birds that you’ll see cavorting around the bird bath in your garden. In fact, it’s kind of ugly—he’s mostly black with a dull yellow head and some white highlights on his wings. While this may sound like nothing special, the Bobolink is actually the only American bird that has black feathers on his underneath and white on his back. This different coloring is especially obvious on the male and makes him stand out and attract the female. After he breeds, the male changes color—his feathers become less bold, allowing him to blend in with his surroundings until it’s time to mate again.
