The Bobolink may have a very funny name, but it’s not one of the more amusing birds that you’ll see cavorting around the bird bath in your garden. In fact, it’s kind of ugly—he’s mostly black with a dull yellow head and some white highlights on his wings. While this may sound like nothing special, the Bobolink is actually the only American bird that has black feathers on his underneath and white on his back. This different coloring is especially obvious on the male and makes him stand out and attract the female. After he breeds, the male changes color—his feathers become less bold, allowing him to blend in with his surroundings until it’s time to mate again. The female has a yellowish color on her under-section, while her sides and back feature black streaks.

Bobolinks mainly like to spend time in the open grassland, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find them around your bird house or bird bath. When my husband was deployed overseas for the first time years ago, I turned to gardening to get me through the days, weeks and months until he was safely home. I read everything I could get my hands on and took every gardening class I could find at the base, the local junior college and spoke to as many people at the garden stores as possible. Work only filled up eight hours a days and I needed to fill the other sixteen! This was back when I bought my very first mini greenhouse to start seedlings in.

Back then it was somewhat crude and flimsy and not very well made but it did do the job for a couple of years. You can now find greenhouses for sale that will fit any budget, any yard or patio size and just about any requirement you might have from growing in the Arctic to gardening in high wind and other inclement weather. I know because I have had a greenhouse in just about every climate in the US and abroad. They are fun and inspirational and will fill your time with a peace beyond understanding.
