The Trident Maple Makes a Great Beginner Bonsai

November 30th, 2009

If you’re just starting out growing outdoor bonsai trees, you might want to start with a Trident Maple bonsai. This outdoor bonsai tree is perfect for the beginner because it’s very easy to grow, and it’s quite hardy, if you live in the south. Its leaves are resistant to scorching, plus the Trident Maple is fairly resistant to pests, too. During the winter, the leaves on the Trident Maple will fall off, leaving it stark and bare until spring. However, once it leafs out, the entire tree will be covered in bright green leaves, making it look incredible.

When it comes to shaping and training your bonsai, there are a number of different styles that can be used on the Trident Maple. However, it’s important to remember the three elements of bonsai shaping. The first is symmetry—everything needs to be somewhat symmetrical to each other, including the roots, trunk, and branches. Balance is important as well; keeping a bonsai in balance may mean making it asymmetrical in order to make it more aesthetic. Finally, proportion is necessary. This includes not only making certain the bonsai is proportionate to itself but also making sure the pot fits in with the overall look. While it may sound contradictory, all three of these elements can be successfully combined to create an amazing bonsai.
